Mindekirken was founded in 1922 in an America changed by WWI.  At that time it was not always socially acceptable to be anything but 100% American. For many, this meant sacrificing their morsmål, or native language. A group of Norwegians recognized the importance of maintaining their language and culture and joined together to establish Den Norske Lutherske Mindekirke--known by everyone today as Mindekirken. Today, Mindekirken is the only church in the Twin Cities where Norwegian is regularly used in worship services and has continued as a gathering place for people who wish to celebrate and maintain their ties to Norway.
