Upper Intermediate 3 covers chapters 5-6 in Stein på stein (2021), a text at the B1 level, and is designed for learners who are comfortable reading and communicating orally in Norwegian at a beginning/lower intermediate level, and who are serious about taking the next step in their Norwegian language learning journey. 

Learners will deepen their understanding of essential linguistic and cultural knowledge through weekly assignments as they increase skills related to reading, speaking, writing, and listening. Instruction is conducted primarily in Norwegian and will challenge learners to demonstrate their learning both orally and through writing. This class is recommended for those who have completed Intermediate Norwegian 5 and above, or the equivalent and who are committed to spending time on their Norwegian studies outside of class.

This beloved sitcom has been on air since 2013 and captures suburban family life in a relatable way, albeit undeniably Norwegian.  Jonas and Marie are happily in love and are just settling into their new home in the fictional town of Granli, Østfold. The idyllic suburb seems, or rather quickly seemed, like the place to take their next steps until they meet their neighbors, the quirky Pedersen family and the affluent Kopperud family. Each 20-minute episode tests the neighbors’ persistence and the new residents’ relationship.

Join us as we read Skråpånatta, an epic novel about a rural community and Norway on the brink of war–a story of the passage of generations, of betrayal and of an aging priest trapped by the prophecy of his own death. A new generation at Hekne has inherited the obsessions of their ancestors and senses that the omens of the Hekne Tapestry are soon to be fulfilled–among them the prophecy of Skråpånatta, the night of doom that, according to the local folklore, will mark the final day of the known world. 

Each week we will work through the novel using  targeted vocabulary lists and discussion tasks — progressively building reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in Norwegian. This class is designed for learners at the B1/B2 intermediate to upper intermediate level.

Bob Oz, the hero of Jo Nesbø’s 2025 Riverton Prize winning novel Minnesota, is investigating a crime that reminds him all too much of an old case that haunts him even though he has been suspended. Nesbø set Minnesota in 2016 and combines hardkokt crime with political and social commentary. This class is conducted in Norwegian.
