HISTORY OF NORWAY | VIKING AGE | ADVANCED LEVEL

The Viking raid of Lindisfarne, Northumbria, England, in 793 AD, marked the start of a new era for nordic people. Building on the social infrastructure that had been well established during the Iron Age, the Viking era saw an expansion of nordic power well beyond the long developed European trade routes. An era of nordic conquest had begun.

What drove the Vikings so far beyond their homelands? What was daily life like in a typical Viking village? What technological advances underpinned rapid spread of Vikings throughout the northern Atlantic region? What role, if any, did the Viking belief system play in this era?

This course will be primarily taught in Norwegian and we will be using the Norwegian book ‘Norges Historie - Fra istid til I dag’ as our primary text. We will also include readings and other media taken from reliable nordic sources to deepen our understanding in the areas of the main course themes.

This class is intended for advanced (C1 or higher) level students. The class will be taught primarily in Norwegian and there will be 2 to 3 hours of work outside of class each week.

The class is intended to be the second in a nine course series on the history of Norway, all taught primarily in Norwegian at the C1 level.
