Building on the social infrastructure that had been well established during the Iron Age\, the Viking era saw an expa nsion of nordic power well beyond the long developed European trade routes . An era of nordic conquest had begun. What drove the Vikings so far bey ond their homelands? What was daily life like in a typical Viking village? What technological advances underpinned rapid spread of Vikings throughou t the northern Atlantic region? What role\, if any\, did the Viking belief system play in this era? This course will be primarily taught in Norweg ian and we will be using the Norwegian book ‘Norges Historie - Fra istid til I dag’ as our primary text. We will also include readings and other media taken from reliable nordic sources to deepen our understanding in t he areas of the main course themes.
